A Soldiers Christmas TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS. ?THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, AND THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
This poem was written by a Soldier stationed in Korea. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable..... PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. Service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves. Author Unknown ~ User Submitted

October Vice District Message
As Chairperson of the District MERLO Team this year we are going a different way with the membership problems in our District. Instead of preaching about membership which we are all tired of hearing about it being drummed into our heads, we as a MERLO Team are going to start to listen to the clubs and their problems and then be there to help them with it. It is time to listen and have less preaching. We are doing it in small groups as Regions or Zones with the clubs who have 20 members or less. We have 20 clubs that need our help also we are going to help any Lioness Clubs that wants help. We had one meeting already and it was nice just to let the clubs open up to us and tell us their problems along with other clubs with some of the same problems, they got to interact with our team and with each other. We had it at a home of one of the Region Chair?s and everyone opened up. Then we are going to the clubs individual and listen to the members and be there to help them with their problems. One problem we know about with some clubs is the fighting among club members and the cliques who want the control of everything. That is a big issue and some people don?t want to let go of losing power in the club. When they are inviting a guest as a possible new member and they hear the arguments among the members that is a turn off for them so they don?t come back to join. We need to address that issue and try to solve it.
If anyone knows how to sign language or knows someone who does please call me. We have the Phila. Deaf Club that needs help with membership our team will be working very hard this year with this club they only have 3 members.
( MERLO TEAM THEME THIS YEAR ---TO LISTEN AND LESS PREACHING )

Dear Lions, Lionesses and Leos,August Vice District Message As we are ready getting to start a new Lions year, I want to welcome everyone back and hope you had a great vacation. I am all ready busy after coming back from my vacation to Disney World on August 1st with 4 adults and 5 children I need another one just to unwind from all the driving we did to there and back. Next time I will fly there. I just got back and had to repack for my first Council Meeting from August 6th to 8th. There were a lot of meetings all weekend learning but they were very interesting. My next seminar is August 28th & 29th at Burnham Pa. this is with the District MERLO Team. We are really learning a lot to take back to the clubs to try to help the clubs who really need it. I will be writing to some club and set up to have myself and the District MERLO Team to come out and see how we can help them. We will work with them and will not ask the clubs to pay our way, for this coming year we will be in your corner. We will help you, but the club has to really want our help other wise it would be a waste of time to everyone. We will help you plan for a membership drive or anything else you may want to try. You can call me anytime or E-Mail me if you have a problem and my team will be there. I am looking forward coming to your club in the near future and hope to work beside your club. I am asking any club with 20 members or less who would like our Team to come and help them to please let me know so I can set it up with your club. We are here to help because we know it is not easy to try to get new members. Let?s see what we can do together. Yours in Lionism, Pat Fox Vice District Governor 14-A

NEWSLETTER When the year started I asked that each club put the districts web site into its news letter that is shared with the club members so that each club member could see the district news. While some of you have done so, some have not. Could you please do so that your membership can see what others are doing and what is happening in the district. It would be greatly appreciated if you would put it into each and every issue so your membership can keep current,
The site is http://padistict14a@lionwap.org

July's Message |

What an honor and privilege it is to have been installed as the District Governor on July 9th, 2004 to serve for the 2004-2005 year of Lionism. I want to express my ?Thank you? to each and everyone of you for this honor. As I traveled the highways and byways this past year, the encouragement was highly positive. Together we can move forward and achieve many things. MD 14A is a first class team!!! Please remember we are not in this for our own personal goal, but for the goal of all our members to serve others!! We need to work in ?harmony and unity? to achieve the goals and objectives. Clement F. Kusiak, our newly installed International President for 2004-2005 has challenged us with his theme??Share Success through Service? We need to promote our many accomplishments, though public relations and appropriate recognition to amplify the success we have achieved over the past 87 years. By sharing success though service we will: Learn about other Lions members successful projects Increase community awareness and attract new members Increase the enthusiasm and motivation of our members
As your District Governor I will be promoting our presidents goals as well as my own. 1. Visitations- Each and every club should get out and visit other clubs in your zone and region as well as other zone and regions, expand your clubs horizons. You will meet some great people throughout. 2. Communications- We will continue to send a written newsletter to the club presidents and secretaries and ask that you make available to your membership copies or have them go to our new website (www.padistrict14Alionwap.org) 3. Membership-set a goal of having a net increase in membership for your club of one more as of June 30, 2005 than you had on June 30, 2004. More than that would be a positive for your club as well as the district!!

What a treat the month of July was. On June 30, my wife and I departed for the International convention in Detroit. There I was treated to five (5) days of District Governor School, where they prepared us for our year in the ?Hot Seat?. The second four (4) days were spent with the; over 14,000 Lions, Lioness and other dignitaries from around the world in downtown Detroit at the Civic center and other locations. After returning home I had seven (7) days to address issues within our district, and then it was off again for two days in the western part of Pennsylvania. One in Harrisburg with the new International president Clem Kusiak, where he and his staff put on a program for: Membership development attended by over 150 Lions and Lioness. The second day was at Beacon lodge where we were treated to tours, a luncheon and entertainment by the residents. What a great day! We should feel great about what goes on at the lodge. If you have never been there I would encourage all of you to make an effort. I would encourage each club to continue its support and if your club has not done so in the past get on board with a contribution this year. Back home again for four (4) days them off again to ?Leader Dog School for the Blind? for two days of tours and seeing what makes the school such a success. We saw many different things at the school and were given the privilege to work with a leader dog as if we were visually challenged, what an experience to see what happens. The clubs from Pennsylvania are the number two supporter of the programs at the school and Lions Clubs International supports the school about 25% of its costs. Many of the clubs have sent students to the school as well as financial support. I would like to ask that each club consider both a contribution to the Leader Dog School for the Blind as well as to Beacon Lodge during my year as Governor. I feel that both programs reflect two of our many groups we like to support.

The fall season is just about here and many of our clubs are chomping at the bit to get started with our fund raisers and projects to help others. The summer has slipped away to its many memories and good time that were had by all of us. It?s now time to get our plans underway for the upcoming Lions year. While many clubs keep going year round some are just getting started for the New Year.
As we move into this year keep in mind the theme of our president Clem Kusiak ?Share Success through Service? 1. Share your accomplishments through Public Relations. Use your compliments in article that you send to local newspapers as well as any other type of media. This type of publicity may draw potential members to your doors 2. Learn about other clubs in your area. They may have some projects you could join in or even use as potential projects for your club. 3. ?The Art of Recognition.? We at times fail to recognize those individuals in our clubs who have given of time and effort to help the club achieve a club activity. There is a new book called ?The Art of Recognition? which you can get from Lions International for a small fee that will give you many new ideas on how to recognize the membership in your club. As a club leader you can use this as a tool to help motivate your membership. Many clubs have methods to recognize their membership both formal and informal. Please share those with us and we can let other clubs know what they are. You can e-mail me at JamesCavallaro@comcast.net I would like to share them with all of our clubs. Planning this Lions year takes many different paths for each of our clubs, but there is one that we all share in that is ?White Cane Days? The familiar white cane with the red band is used by visually challenged persons. It was a simple device first seen in 1930 by the inventor Lions George Bonham from the Peoria Illinois Lions Club. Many clubs have their own way of participating in this drive, but when all is added up we do an incredible job of helping others. Anthony Casadei form the Clifton Heights Lions Club will be our chair for this year. Please give him your cooperation and support!! My goals for the New Year include membership, visitation, communication and Region and zone gatherings. WE have gotten off to a great start this year we have added a net gain to our district of 35 members in July and August. This includes the new ?Philadelphia Korean-American Lions Club, a new branch club as part of the Jorge-Bird club and we are currently working with another ethnic group for an additional Lions Club. Our VDG Pat Fox has started a process to help any club that would like to have our MERLOW team work with your club in the process of recruitment and retention of members. Please give her a call or you region or zone chairs who are members of this team. They are all listed in your new directories. Visitation- Some clubs do and some do not visit other clubs. What a great way to get to know those who are in another club. This is an art form that has slowly shrunk over the years, but what a great way to have some fun. There are many stories that come from these visits, try it you might like it Communications. We have published this newsletter and mailed it to 200 persons in our district and in the state. I ask that each club circulated the newsletter at one of their meetings and share the web site with those who would like to see it on their computers. http://padistrict14a.lionwap.org/ This is also a tool for you to use if you would like to have it circulated for the whole district. Region and zone meetings have been set up in Region 2, 3 and 5 with others to follow. Each year Bucks county has a rally that attracts 200 lions and guests, if you have not been to one give it a try, October 28 is this years date and you can make you reservations on the form that is included with this newsletter. We not only care, we not only serve, I ask that you keep it up

November Message
|
|
It is now November and one-third of the Lions year is gone! White cane drives have been completed and hopefully on a positive note. Fall club projects have been started and in some clubs completed as you read this message. Many of our clubs are preparing for the holiday season of giving to others by way of Food baskets, clothing drives and holiday cheer. As we started this year each club should have set some goals to achieve during the year. Rate you club to see if it has achieved those that you set.
(web site address is http://padistrict14a.lionwap.org) These are some of the goals that I had asked each club to work with this year so that we could move our district back to its level of prominence in the state. Our President Clem Kusiak?s theme this year is ?Share Success through Service.?
The goals of our president are comparable to those that I have outlined above. The MERLO team and Healthy tool box leadership have been helpful this year as we have been able to work with clubs that needed membership. As we move into the Holiday season try not to loose any of the momentum that you have achieved. It is a time of the year where people are highly charitable and generous of their time it may be just that time to ask someone you meet at a holiday function if he or she would be interested in hearing what Lionism is all about. Who knows you may get a new member. Michelle and I would like to wish each and every one of our members and their families a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!!
